Although Kivi was among the very earliest authors of prose and lyrics in Finnish, he is still considered one of the greatest.
Aleksis Kivi was born in 1830s. Aleksis Kivi is part of G.I. Generation also known as The Greatest Generation. This generation experienced much of their youth during the Great Depression and rapid technological innovation such as the radio and the telephone.

Though Kivi grew up in rural poverty, he entered the University of Helsinki in 1857.
Aleksis Kivi was a product of three localities - Nurmijärvi, Helsinki and Siuntio - and all of them had their own essential importance to his growth as a person and as a writer. Kivi's mother's home parish of Tuusula provided a final resting place for the author, who suffered in the last years of his life from mental illness.

Life. Aleksis Kivi was born in Nurmijärvi, Grand Duchy of Finland, into a tailor's family. In 1846 he left for school in Helsinki, and in 1859 he was accepted into the University of Helsinki, where he studied literature and developed an interest in the theatre.
